The faces behind MBSA
Medical Biochemistry Students’ Association was founded to represent those who form a part of the Medical Biochemistry course, as well as all those who study medical research. We vow to provide services to better student life socially, culturally and academically. We will work continuously towards reaching our aim and are honoured to be part of MBSA, the medical researchers in the making.
THE TEAM
MAYA ZAMMIT
Vice President
My name is Maya Zammit and I am a third year medical biochemistry student. I am currently writing my thesis on the contribution of rare variants in genes associated with diabetes and insulin resistance towards Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus risk in Malta. Throughout this course I’ve gained extensive knowledge about the vast world of medical academia, and I wish to continue pursuing genetic research at a postgraduate level as I have developed a passion for the subject and hope to make a difference towards genetic advancements.
This term is my second in MBSA, this year as vice president. I believe that as a team, we have always strived to represent the field of medical research studies and present fresh ideas and help to our students, and this year will be even greater!
My name is Marie Claire Cefai, and I have always been passionate about science, particularly in the fields of cancer, stem cells, and genetics. This course has helped me deepen my understanding of these areas and has fueled my commitment to advancing research in these fields. I have been a member of MBSA since my first year of this course, and I have observed first hand the positive impact that this organisation has on students. As Secretary General of MBSA, I am dedicated to contribute to the growth and success of the organisation. My aim is to help students by fostering a supportive environment, as well as by creating opportunities for both academic and personal development.

KYLIE ANN FORMOSA
Treasurer
I have always been captivated by the potential of research to unlock new possibilities, especially in
relation to cancer and regenerative medicine. Through this degree, and my current research, I have
been given many valuable insights, fueling my desire to deepen our understanding of disease
pathogenesis and finding targeted therapeutics.
MBSA has always been a source of support throughout the years that I have been a student, and now
that I have been entrusted as treasurer, I am committed to helping the organisation grow and thrive,
creating opportunities for students to engage, learn, and find inspiration for their own paths in medical
research.

LISA BHARWANI SCICLUNA
Public Relations Officer
Studying Medical Biochemistry has truly fueled my curiosity and deepened my love for science. Specifically growing my interest in DNA and protein research techniques. In my third year, I decided to join MBSA because I’ve seen the positive impact they make.
Now, as the P.R.O., my goal is to strengthen our connection with the student community, promote opportunities, and ensure everyone feels heard and represented.

JULIA DEBONO
Creative Director
I decided to pursue Medical Biochemistry to further my passion in genetics and DNA. As a part of this board, I wish to aid student and guide them as best I can. I decided to reprise my role as Creative Director to be a connection to the students and other opportunities

MARIE CLAIRE CEFAI
Secretary General

OMAR TRAD
President
The field of medical research has always fascinated me, especially the field
of immunology. So far this course has provided me with a great insight to the type of revolutionary work this field has to offer, and will lead me to
pursue my goals in further developing our understanding of the human body. I was first
introduced to MBSA in my first year of the course and decided to become a part of this
organisation during my second year. As president I intend on building upon the work that was done by
my predecessors whilst also introducing some new ideas.
